The Department of Physics started its journey in the year 1957, the year of establishment of the college. Since inception, a strong tradition of high-quality academic environment has been inculcated in the department by its highly qualified and academically dedicated faculty members. Three-year B.Sc. degree course started from the session 1960-61 in the new college building under the University of Burdwan. From 2016 onwards the college is affiliated under Kazi Nazrul University and department is running with CBCS curriculum. At present, there are six full time (permanent) faculty members working in the department (details of the faculty members are available from their respective faculty profile in the college website). Most of the faculty members have doctoral (Ph.D.) degree from the prestigious universities or premier Institutes of our country and some of them have post-doctoral research exposure with prestigious fellowships from the Institutions of National and International repute in our country and also from abroad. The current CBCS syllabi, adopted by the UGC, taught in the department are the Honours, Generic and Program level courses in physics along with associated laboratory courses. The present faculty members of the department are very much well acquainted with this current CBCS courses and are strongly motivated in teaching as well as are actively engaged in research in the frontier areas of physics. Some highly qualified and academically motivated ex-faculty members of this department play a great role for the enrichment of overall academic environment of the department by providing honorary academic support and also valuable suggestions time to time. Students of the department are facilitated by providing with well-equipped laboratories, regular theoretical as well as practical classes along with tutorials and healthy academic interactions among the teachers and students. At present there are six laboratories well equipped with the instruments according to the current CBCS syllabus for laboratory courses along with a sophisticated Computational Physics Laboratory. Our laboratory staff in the department is very efficient in performing respective allotted duties in the laboratory classes and also very much cooperative with the students. Department of physics has the facility of a Seminar library having excellent collections of text and reference books and the Honours students of the department regularly borrow books as per their requirement apart from the books from central library. The performances of the students in the university examination are also highly satisfactory. Our students participate in NSS and NCC programme offered by the college. They also take part in various cultural programme and science exhibition held during the annual social program of the colleges. They also publish wall magazine in every year regarding current scientific topics. In the subsequent years, large numbers of students glorified Physics department not only with brilliant results but also with getting admitted in different prestigious Universities and premier Institutions, like BHU, JNU, Jadavpur University, IITs, NITs, ISM, S.N. Bose Centre for Basic Science etc., in their Postgraduate courses through different National level entrance examinations conducted by the universities, JAM and JEST. The physics Honours students of the department are provided with special classes and counselling time to time to orient them for the above-mentioned entrance examinations. The department of physics organises seminar talks by the renowned scientists in regular interval to develop scientific curiosity among the students and to motivate them for pursuing higher studies. The department has a very strong alumni background. Quite a large component of students passed out from the department are now highly positioned in various professional organisations, academic Institutions of National and International repute, like VECC, IIT Mumbai, Delhi University, NPL, BARC, ISRO etc. Many of the ex-students of the department are actively pursuing research work in doctoral and post-doctoral levels in prestigious research institutions like IISc, SNBNCBS, PRL, SINP, IUCAA, ISM, IACS, IIAP, NITs and IITs and also in renowned Institutions in abroad. The objective of the department is to develop a state of art facility to attract a large component of good quality students for pursuing Physics Honours course and to inculcate a strong motivation and determination among them to pursue higher studies and research in the frontier areas of science.
