Department of Chemistry

The department of Chemistry of Triveni Devi Bhalotia College, began its journey in the year 1957. The department of Chemistry of Triveni Devi Bhalotia College works with a goal to impart knowledge and understanding of modern age Chemical science among its students through theoretical and practical training. It aims at enabling and motivating students to excel in various branches of Chemistry through exposure to the academic and research world. It believes in the importance of developing high level thinking skills and sense of morality and values among the students, thus to bring up a bunch of responsible and hardworking future citizens. The vision of the Department is to move towards Excellence in Higher Education in order to create dedicated, skilled and knowledgeable human resource to fulfill the need of the society scientific world in consonance with the societal values. The department of Chemistry began its journey in the year 1957 with B.Sc. general degree course. Later, in 1973, Honours course in Chemistry was introduced. Both these courses are still being successfully run in the new CBCS form introduced by the UGC. In the year 2015, Triveni Devi Bhalotia College’s affiliation was moved to Kazi Nazrul University from the University of Burdwan. Since then, all the courses are being conducted following the guidelines of Kazi Nazrul University. Post graduate course has been introduced in 2016 and is being successfully run since then. Ph.D. Program has been introduced in 2021. The department is equipped with five classrooms, one of which is ICT enabled. The department is equipped with modern facilities, research levels instruments and enough consumables. There are six laboratories, one of which is purely a research lab. Apart from the researches of the faculty members, the post graduate students of the departments are also engaged in active research as a part of their curriculum. Besides teaching and research, the department is actively engaged in various types of extra-curricular activities which include organization of seminars, lectures in addition to laboratory visits. The department of chemistry has produced many success stories in its long run. Shantiswarup Bhatnagar awardees Professor Partha Sarathi Mukherjee of Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and Professor Tapas Kumar Maji of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research are both alumni of this department. Professor Shital Chattopadhyay, another ex-student of this department is a Professor of Chemistry at Kalyani University now. Many of our students have pursued higher studies in the country and abroad, and many are now involved in highest level doctoral and postdoctoral research works in the top institutes of this country and also in other countries like Israel, Finland, South Africa etc. A great number of ex-students of this department are working successfully also in academia like schools and colleges throughout the country.
