Department of Economics

The Department of Economics, TDB College, Raniganj, was established in the year 1957. It is one of the few departments that were taught in the nascent stage of the college. Though, initially only Intermediate and BA/BSc. General courses in Economics were offered in the Department, intermediate course was discontinued in 2002 as per the decision of the Government of West Bengal and later in 1965 Economics was introduced as an Honours subject. The Department of Economics, TDB College is devoted in providing the best of formal training in economics. It aims to offer rigorous training in theory, tools and methods for the subject with the special focus on the current economic situation. We encourage students to actively interact with the teachers in the class and beyond class hours if need be. We also provide an approachable environment for various academic discussions. The teachers try to inculcate research orientation among the students and encourage them to undertake projects in various socio-economic fields. Interaction with other academic institutes as well as corporate houses through invited lectures and workshops are encouraged. We aim to educate and resource the students to make best informed career decision. The students are part of a vibrant academic community at TDB College, comprising of skilled faculty members of various subjects and can develop know-how within an interdisciplinary framework. Our vision is to prepare well rounded, responsible, skilled, and confident individuals who desire to achieve their full potential. Students actively participate in college social, exhibition, singing and poster competitions etc. No subject of the present day is as important as economics. Economics governs the life of the individual, society and the modern states. The subject plays a significant role in the international affairs. The knowledge of economics helps in solving many problems and the study has practical advantages for the society. Economics provides a framework for understanding the actions and decisions of individuals, businesses and governments. It provides a means to understand interactions in a market-driven society and for analyzing government policies that affect the families, jobs and lives of citizens. Economics is not a bundle of theories and principles. It is a practical social science. The study of the subject is not undertaken merely for the sake of knowledge. It is done to lay down principles and policies for removing poverty and increasing human welfare. At present the department offers B.A./B.Sc. Honours and Program courses in Economics. Trained as economists the students are expected to be well prepared for careers in academia, government, national and international development agencies, research institutions, the corporate sector and the media. Job opportunities for economics graduates in India includes Indian Economic Services (IES), banking services within public sector, job profiles in private as well as foreign banks, economic consultant, employment opportunities in international agencies like World Bank and International Labor organization. Certain job roles that economics graduates can perform are Professional Economist, Financial Risk Analyst, Data Analyst (Banking Sector), Financial Planner (Banking Sector), Financial Economist, Equity Analyst, Economic Researcher, Business Economist, Investment Analyst, Actuary and many more. By now, teaching programmes of Economics department have completed several decades and we take pride in having a galaxy of alumni from our programmes. Looking back, department has an equally exotic past with an enviable crop of academics/researchers/and other staff, who gave their due share for its present strength.
