Since the inception of the college in the year 1957, Bengali was given importance in both intermediate and B.A. class with opening of Alternative BENGALI (COMBINATION).The college started with one man department Prof Madhusudan Basu formerly of Madhusudan College, Jessore, Prof Nanigopal Chakraborty joined as second teacher who came from Mahisadal College, Medinipur within almost one year of Shri Ramdulal Bose joined as a third teacher. The college shifted from Raniganj high school to its present building, Kharsuli with a big campus and with the growth of the college, the Depatment of Bengali also became developed. Shri Madhusudan Bose resigned and joined Government College. The Department got honours affiliation in the year 1967 with teacher strength of four with Shri Biswanath Banerjee and Shri Jaharlal Bakshi. From the very beginning, honours department was running in a planned way. It has its own seminar room and departmental library. Students were allowed to collect books of their own choice and with the help of the teachers they used to arrange seminars, inviting scholars, from other institutions to deliver lectures on prescribed topics. After the opening of the honours department efforts were given to develop the students with the literary Zeal and the department became very popular and earned reputation in the area. Teaching quality of the department was of high order and students were encouraged in literary activities. The department used to organize educational tours every year accompanying all teachers.
