The Department of Urdu was established in 1969. In the beginning Urdu was only taught in Higher Secondary.  For the first time in 1978 BA general course was introduced here. Raniganj is an industrial belt which has a large number of Urdu speaking population. Naturally a demand was raised for introduction of Urdu Honours in this College. As a result, Honours course was introduced in this college in 1969. Since then, the department contributed its full energy towards the development of Urdu Language and Literature by imparting proper education to the students. As a result, a large number of students passed and took bachelor degree from this college. But in spite of this there was no institution in this reign for further higher studies and there was no College except Hooghly Mohsin College under Burdwan University where M.A. (Urdu) was taught. Therefore, the college took the initiative to open the Post-Graduation in Urdu for the social benefit and upliftment of the society. At last, post-graduation in Urdu was introduced here in 2010 under Burdwan University. In 2015 the department came under Kazi Nazrul University where after high demand of Urdu belt of Raniganj and surroundings, research in Urdu was introduced. And T D B college became the first where not only post-graduation but also M.Phil. and Ph.D. course in Urdu were started in 2019 and 2020 simultaneously. The department’s main objective is to spread awareness about literary and cultural importance and relevance of Urdu Culture, language and literature in India. Not only that it preaches human values, nationalism, morality and positive outlook through the valuable literary assets of predecessors and present scholars of Urdu language. Apart from teaching the department organizes state level seminars, Special Lectures to crest about literary cultural importance in relevance to befitting circumstances and time. The department also offers B.A. (Hons) & M.A. in Urdu. The thrust research area of the department is study of modern literature in Bengal, Deccani Language, Linguistics, Translation, Journalism and different literary movements. It has a separate Seminar Library for under graduate and post-graduate students. By this time many students specially girls have been awarded M.A. Degree with excellence and many of them cleared UGC NET & WBSET. Some of them engaged in different colleges and Schools. Students of this department use to get engaged and participate in Seminar, Quiz, Debate, Essay Writing, Extempore, News Reading, Recitation etc. The motto of the department is to develop and empower the students through proper guidance and quality education. They may get opportunity for job in schools as well as colleges and universities. The students may appear for Civil Service Examination and get administrative jobs in govt. sector. They may make their career bright in journalism too. (Both print and electronic media) as an anchor, editor, news reader, reporter, translator and programme designer etc. the student having bachelor degree in Urdu may go to film industry too and proof themselves to be a dialogue writer, poet and director etc. Besides, all these there are so many national and international departments where a well-qualified Urdu scholar may proof his ability and get a chance to a handsome job. The students may proof themselves in private sector also.
